Lights, Camera, Action!


How did I never notice until now that the Tailored Woman store appears in a frame of the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's?! So thrilled to find this. George Peppard and Audrey Hepburn must be walking along 57th St. towards 5th Avenue.

My wedding gown was from the Tailored Woman. That was 53 years ago. I still have it. :)

I discovered The Tailored Woman when I went to Hunter College in the 1960's. It became then and remains today my criterion for elegance. How do I follow your blog? i promise to be faithful and reverent.

The Tailored Woman occupied the southern third (or fourth?) of the row of buildings, Fifth Avenue from 57th to 58th Street, that was eventually absorbed into the Bergdorf-Goodman premises. It commanded the northwest corner of the intersection, the southeast corner of the city block.

I remember very clearly my mother's Canadian fisher stole from The Tailored Woman: three rows in the back, two in the front, with tails streaming at the ends. It was well promoted, sold for about $300 in the 50s. It was an alternate to her longer but less expensive blue fox, flat enough so that she could fling a few feet of it over her shoulder. I can hear in my fading mind a somewhat rough gentlemen speaking out as we left the Top Hat Diner, "Lady, your coon is draggin'."

A Plaza Tale

I've heard from a number of people who remember the Tailored Woman store and its mercurial owner, Eugene K. Denton .  I received the following message a few months ago from Diana Pons, who gave me permission to share her story. My father, Victor Pons, was the maitre d' of the Oak Room at The Plaza Hotel on 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, just steps from The Tailored Woman. I am writing a book about my father's years at The Plaza (1953-1973) and the many experiences he, and I, had there. I was trying to remember when The Tailored Woman closed. I just Googled the store's name and I found your web site! My father's years at The Plaza reflect my life from age 6 to 26. Your great-great-granduncle (Eugene K. Denton) came often to the Oak Room.
