Opinionated, moi?

I've noticed a new trend in surveys: bribery.  It started with an email from my renters insurance* agency asking if I would accept $5 to tell them why I canceled the insurance.  (Simple. Because I bought a house and needed home insurance instead.)  But I never had a chance to supply that answer, scrolling instead through a few questions about why I canceled my car insurance.  Since I'm the ethical type, I added a comment on the last page: "Not driving the imaginary car much these days, so I canceled my imaginary car insurance.  But thanks for the $5!")  True to their word, the agency sent me a check a week later.

Imagine how much money I could make for freely giving my opinion.  (Sample thought from the bus this morning: "I know it's early, and I'm hardly one to talk, but you really might want to brush your hair before you leave the house. That will be $5.")

Just a pipedream.  But tonight I did fill out a survey from United--yep, my ex is trying to pull me back in again--about new credit card options.  Clearly the airline has been stalking my blog and is not happy that I'm spending so much time with my US Air card these days.

This survey was a little more involved than the fake car one.  Sample question: "Who does the decision making in your household?" (Answer: Sometimes no one.  That's why an old print is still propped against a wall in the living room three months after I moved in. I don't want to put anther hole in the wall without being absolutely certain that the print should go here and not upstairs in the study.)  Then there were a bunch of tedious screens asking me to compare one hypothetical card to another.  Sadly, I didn't see an option for "card that makes my airline treat me well again." (No, $10 doesn't count, United.)

*I spent 10 minutes Googling whether "renters insurance" should have an apostrophe ("renter's") or not.  I know, sad.  Ultimately I decided to leave the apostrophe out.

Perhaps you have an answer: When it comes to a house, what is the difference between a den, a study, an office or a library?

Hi Icarus,

A library's main purpose is displaying books, and providing a place to read them. I just read an article that said home libraries are back in again (at least for the McMansion set). I think of a den as more akin to a family room... a place to relax and watch TV, though reading would certainly be permitted there as well. A home office is set up as, well, an office. I guess I decided I liked the word "study" because it doesn't sound so work-focused as "office." According to the dictionary, a study is "a room used for reading and writing and studying." Perfect, right?

Hi there,
This is going to sound rather random, so be prepared. I have three fur coats that had belonged to a great aunt that I plan on donating to a local theater, but prior to doing so I was trying to find out a little about them. The first two I looked up had little success... But the last one is from Tailored Woman. That is how I came across your blog... Maybe you already have several fur coats from the store or you are not interested... But I thought maybe it would be nice for you to have.... If you're interested I can send you some pictures first. Do you have a public email that I could send the pictures to?

Hope to hear from you soon,
Kim

Hi Kim,

What a lovely message! So kind of you to think of me. The Tailored Woman was famous for its furs, and I do own a couple of vintage ones already. Thank you very much for the offer but sounds like a good plan to donate to the theatre company. I would be happy to think of the coat having a second life onstage.
